The Mumbai Police Crime Branch made two more arrests on Thursday in connection with the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique. The arrested individuals, Aditya Gudankar and Rafiq Shaikh were brought before the Esplanade court, where they were remanded into Mumbai Police custody until November 13.
Both suspects were apprehended in Pune, Maharashtra. With these arrests, the total number of individuals arrested in the case has now risen to 18.
Earlier on Wednesday, another suspect, Gaurav Vilas Apune, aged 32, was also arrested from Pune. Police said Apune had met with other suspects to plan the murder and was in contact with the group of shooters initially hired to kill Siddique.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Crime Branch also recovered a weapon used in the murder from the Pune residence of another suspect, Rupesh Mohol. Earlier, a weapon had been seized from the Raigad home of another suspect, Ram Fulchand Kanoujia, who had been renting the property. Police also found images of pistols on the shooters' mobile phones.
In a related development, one of the key witnesses in the case reported being threatened by an unknown caller on Wednesday. The caller demanded ₹5 crore and warned that the witness would be killed if the payment was not made. A complaint has been filed with the Khar police station.
Baba Siddique, a senior NCP leader, was shot dead on October 12 outside his son Zeeshan’s office building in Bandra East. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital after sustaining two gunshot wounds but succumbed to his injuries.
The gang led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi claimed responsibility for the murder shortly after Siddique’s death. Investigations have revealed that Bishnoi's brother, Anmol Bishnoi, is believed to be the mastermind behind the assassination, having been in contact with the shooters before the killing.
