Any deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons to Japan as part of an "Asian NATO" would result in a collapse of regional stability, warned Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Wednesday.

On the eve of his inauguration, Japan's new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba outlined a plan to strengthen Tokyo's alliance with Washington by establishing an "Asian NATO" and stationing Japanese troops on U.S. soil.

Ishiba stated that this new security alliance could even involve shared control over Washington's nuclear weapons as a deterrent against Japan's nuclear-armed neighbours.

"And this will lead to what? The correct answer is - the collapse of any stability in an already long-suffering region," Zakharova said.

The proposal is not something Tokyo is moving ahead with immediately after India and the United States expressed different concerns about it. But Takeshi Iwaya, Japan's foreign minister, has said "It's one idea for the future."
