The Bangladesh Women's Football Team made history once again, securing their second consecutive SAFF Women's Championship title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over host Nepal. The thrilling final, held at Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu on Wednesday, showcased the team's resilience and skill.
Bangladesh previously claimed their maiden SAFF Championship title in 2022, also defeating Nepal at the same venue, with a 3-1 victory. In this year's final, Monika Chakma and Ritu Porna Chakma each scored for Bangladesh, while Amisha Karki netted Nepal's lone goal. All three goals came in the second half, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.
Nepal nearly took an early lead in the 10th minute. Sabitra Bandhari’s long pass found Amisha Karki, who fired a right-footed shot from the top of the box, only for it to ricochet off the crossbar. Amisha had another chance in the 28th minute, but she struggled to connect with a pass from Sabitra, leaving Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma unchallenged.
Despite limited offensive opportunities in the first half, Bangladesh earned two corner kicks but couldn’t capitalize on them. Both teams created multiple scoring chances before the break but failed to find the net.
The second half saw Bangladesh pushing to break the deadlock, and their efforts paid off in the 52nd minute. Following a combined attack between Sabina and Monika, Monika Chakma scored with a well-placed shot amidst a goalmouth scramble, giving Bangladesh a deserved lead.
Nepal responded quickly, equalizing just four minutes later. Amisha Karki received a long pass from Preeti Rai and skillfully placed the ball into the net, leaving Bangladesh's keeper Rupna with no chance to save.
The defining moment arrived in the 81st minute when Ritu Porna Chakma, after receiving a throw-in, sprinted down the left flank and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot. Her stunning strike secured Bangladesh's championship, sparking celebrations among the players and fans.
Ritu Porna Chakma’s outstanding performance earned her the Player of the Match title. Nepal fought valiantly to stage a comeback but couldn’t overcome Bangladesh’s solid defence, ultimately settling for the runners-up position for the sixth time in the tournament’s history.
