Phil Simmons, who has replaced Chandika Hathurusingha as the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team, is set to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow (Wednesday) to join the squad in preparation for the ICC World Test Championship series against South Africa.

The 61-year-old Simmons has reached an agreement with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to lead the team until the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed expressed enthusiasm about Simmons’s appointment, stating, "We are pleased to announce Simmons as our coach." This decision follows the suspension of Hathurusingha due to alleged misconduct involving a national player and an extended leave period that exceeded the allowed duration.

"I had the opportunity to speak with Phil Simmons and discuss his cricket philosophy and ideas," Faruque continued. "His extensive coaching experience, vision, and proven track record of success make him an ideal choice for this role."

Simmons boasts a distinguished coaching career that played a significant role in the BCB's decision. He represented the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1987 and 1999. His international coaching journey began in 2004 with Zimbabwe, followed by a tenure with Ireland from 2007 to 2015.

Simmons was appointed head coach of the West Indies on two occasions and was at the helm when the team clinched the ICC World T20 title in 2016. He also coached Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019.

Most recently, Simmons has been involved with various franchise leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League, Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket in the USA, and the GT20 league in Canada.
