Trump 2.0: Expectations, Reality, and the Next 1460 Days

Donald Trump has made history yet again by being elected as the 47th President of the United States in the 60th U.S. Presidential Election of 2024. Defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Trump secured his second non-consecutive term, an achievement that cements his place in U.S. political history. On January 20, 2025, his grand inauguration ushered him back into the White House, marking the beginning of another four years of his administration.

Trump previously served as the President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. As such, by winning this time, Trump has created another history of the century in the history of the United States of America (USA). He has become the second president in the United States history who has not won twice in a row but has been elected the U.S. president for two terms.

In the history of the United States, Democrat President Grover Cleveland ran for a second term in 1888 and was defeated by Republican Benjamin Harrison. Cleveland defeated that time with Harrison and ran for president again in the next election, defeating Harrison and was elected as the president of the United States for a second term. Because of that fact, Cleveland was the only president in American history who served two consecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897). But this time, Donald Trump has broken this history by becoming the president for the second time.

There is considerable curiosity about Trump globally, especially due to his eccentric and aggressive demeanour. Moreover, the power the United States wields in global control adds to this intrigue. The United States provides economic, military, and diplomatic assistance to various states to maintain its global hegemony in the international arena. Since the end of World War II, the United States has been providing various forms of assistance to European and Southeast Asian countries to contain the Soviet Union and its satellite states within a bipolar world order. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia became a rival in the U.S.'s unipolar world order. Additionally, China’s economic expansion in the 21st century has emerged as another major concern for the United States. The United States frequently asserts its dominance by either directly intervening in certain countries or by supporting allied nations in their military endeavours. This serves two purposes: first—to send the message that anyone opposing the U.S. or its allies will face dire consequences, and second—to profit from the arms trade. Through this, the U.S. sustains its hegemonic position.

Current conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the Iran-Israel conflict, the Lebanon-Israel conflict, and the Israel-Palestine war—are part of this global strategy. The U.S. has faced significant economic repercussions as a result of its military aid to Ukraine and Israel, leading to a major downturn in the economy, inflation, rising unemployment, and a lack of new job creation. These issues directly impacted the recent election results. Despite the controversies surrounding Trump, Americans have re-elected him as president due to the belief that he can rejuvenate the economy, which was severely impacted by immediate past President Biden's assistance in foreign wars. This was a key factor in Trump's victory in this election.

It is easy to see how angry Americans are with Democrats by looking at the results of the recent election. Trump secured 312 electoral votes out of 538, while his rival, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, secured 226 votes. Trump won in all seven of the key swing states, taking all 93 electoral votes from those states under the "winner-takes-all" system.

Trump is the embodiment of the "America First" policy. It is on the basis of this policy that Americans voted for him. Faced with a fragile economy, inflation, unemployment, and the failure of the Democratic administration to address the Ukraine-Middle East crisis, Americans have chosen the controversial Trump to restore the country's economy and maintain its influence on the global stage.

The day after his victory (November 6, 2024), Trump announced, “I will govern with a simple goal. I will fulfill the promises I made.” To achieve this, he outlined seven key steps, known as "Agenda 47", which will continue the work he started during his first term.

1. Deporting Illegal Immigrants

Trump has repeatedly pledged to deport the highest number of illegal immigrants in U.S. history. He promised to complete the construction of the wall at the Mexico border, which was initiated during his first term in 2017. However, implementing this massive plan will require overcoming significant challenges.

2. Focus on the Economy

Trump expressed concern about the state of the U.S. economy before the election. He promised to reduce inflation and take steps to lower the prices of essential commodities. Additionally, Trump announced plans to impose at least a 10% tariff on foreign goods and increase tariffs on Chinese imports by 60%. This could, however, place additional pressure on American consumers.

3. Cutting Back on Climate Policies

After becoming president in 2017, Trump took steps against environmental protection policies and withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement. He has once again promised to reduce climate policies, primarily to support the U.S. auto industry. Known as an opponent of electric vehicles, Trump has also pledged to increase fossil fuel production.

4. Ending Ongoing Wars

Trump has long criticized the immediate past President Joe Biden for continuing to support Ukraine in its war against Russia, providing hundreds of billions of dollars in military and economic aid. He promised that if he were re-elected, he would end the war within 24 hours through negotiation. Trump also promised to end the Israel-Palestine conflict and cease U.S. military aid to both sides, pushing for a peace settlement. Recently, under his influence, a ceasefire deal has begun in Gaza after 15 months.

5. Repealing Abortion Rights

Trump has faced pressure from his supporters regarding abortion rights. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion. During his campaign, Trump stated that he would not change the law regarding abortion rights, but would maintain a strict stance on the issue.

6. Pardon for Rioters

In 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C., attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump has stated that he will pardon those arrested in connection with the attack and take action against their unjust imprisonment.

7. Firing Special Counsel Jack Smith Special Counsel Jack Smith is investigating Trump for two criminal cases, including his involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack and the removal of classified government documents. Trump has promised that upon taking office, he will immediately fire Jack Smith, dismissing the charges against him.

Trump would face significant political and administrative challenges in fulfilling these promises. Time will tell how much Trump will be able to fulfill his promises and the expectations of Americans. Will the winds of change blow across the world during Trump's 2.0 period?

Trump is also at the centre of discussion and interest regarding the recent political changes in Bangladesh. Awami League supporters say, "After Trump's inauguration on January 21, everything will change!"

It is worth noting that on August 5, 2024, a mass uprising by students centred on the quota reform movement led to a 'Bangla Spring' similar to the Arab Spring, and the Awami League, the party that had been in power for a long time in Bangladesh, fell, and the party's leader, Sheikh Hasina, took refuge in India. This led to significant political chaos in Bangladesh, and a caretaker government led by Dr. Yunus was formed.

The United States will keep India in its hands to maintain dominance in this region, particularly in countering China. As a result, the United States may take actions in line with India's interests, which will impact neighboring countries. Bangladesh, due to its geographical significance, remains central to this issue. People of both Bangladesh and India are now looking at the face of the Trump administration. Will the Trump administration interfere in the political issues of Bangladesh at all?

Since August 5, bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh have not been going well. India has suspended visas since that day and diplomatic tensions have begun. India has not built trust in any party other than the Awami League. There are sufficient reasons behind it as well. Because India has not received so many benefits from any other parties except the Awami League. Since then, the highly enthusiastic people of both countries have been continuously threatening each other on various issues. No matter how much anti-India sentiment is fostered, due to geographical reasons, Bangladesh cannot move forward without India. Hopefully, the relationship between India and Bangladesh will normalize soon, which will be beneficial for both countries.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump's friendship with India's BJP Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump's close ties with India's top billionaire 'Ambani' family, have sparked public speculation. Moreover, the fact that seven Indians are in top important positions in the Trump administration has further fueled curiosity. India is an important tool for the United States to maintain its authority in South Asia. The United States will keep India in its hands to maintain dominance in this region, particularly in countering China. As a result, the United States may take actions in line with India's interests, which will impact neighbouring countries. Bangladesh, due to its geographical significance, remains central to this issue. People of both Bangladesh and India are now looking at the face of the Trump administration. Will the Trump administration interfere in the political issues of Bangladesh at all?
