A group of writers, publishers and cultural activists have demanded within 72 hours the release of poet Sohel Hasan Galib who has been detained on charges of hurting religious sensibilities.

They set the deadline at a protest rally and human chain at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair on Monday.

Publisher Mahabubur Rahman said at the programme, "If Galib is not released within 72 hours, we will also file petition at the international level. Don't judge us by numbers."

Galib, who was arrested under Section 54 on charges of hurting religious sentiment, was taken on a two-day remand for questioning.

He was also brought to court on Feb 14, where he was shown arrested under Section 54, and the investigation officer requested a 10-day remand.

At that time, Galib's lawyer applied for bail, seeking cancellation of his remand. The court rejected the remand and bail applications and ordered him to be sent to prison.

Police arrested Galib at Sanarpar in Fatullah, Narayanganj, around 8:30 pm on Feb 13.

Writer Khaliquzzaman Elias said at Monday's programme, "Police have arrested Galib and he has also been remanded.

“We have gathered here today to protest this and demand his immediate release."

Poet-essayist Raju Alauddin said, "The way the state is treating Galib is nothing new. We have always seen the state using religion. I have heard that he has also been remanded for two days.

"But the state does not know that a writer can be arrested, but not his thoughts. The state has committed suicide by arresting Galib for writing poetry."

Poet Chanchal Ashraf questioned, "Galib did not steal; he did not commit corruption. So why was he taken on remand? Many big thieves are roaming free—why was he arrested?"

Poet and journalist Jewel Mazhar said, "The state should not simplify the poet's language."

Mahabubur Rahman from Adarsha Prakashan said, "Before standing here, I personally contacted three advisors, and the press office of the chief advisor. I feel that they are not taking the matter seriously.

"If this government fails, we will be the ones who suffer the most. To those in power now, I say: if you forget your friends after just a few days in power, remember this—when you step down, you will have to sit with us."

Writer and journalist Dhrubo Sadiq said, "Police suddenly became so enthusiastic that they had to arrest a poet. Galib was losing his job because he was supporting the July Movement.

“Our appeal to the government is to release Galib and ensure everyone's safety."

In 2024, criticism emerged over a poem written by Galib in a book published by Ujan Prakashan.

When the poem went viral on social media, Galib was accused of “satirising” the Prophet Muhammad.
