The Chief Advisor’s Press Wing today refuted a report published by the daily Janakantha, which claimed that 72 rapes had occurred across the country within the last 65 hours, calling the information incorrect and misleading.

In a statement issued through its verified Facebook page, the Press Wing Facts clarified that the Janakantha report, published at around 3:30 PM on Monday, relied on a Facebook post as its primary source. According to the Press Wing, the post in question falsely asserted that the report was compiled using various screenshots of past incidents, which were misrepresented as having occurred within the stated timeframe.

"It is unexpected and undesirable to spread exaggerated information and false statistics about a serious crime like rape, as it creates confusion in the public mind," the statement read. "The interim government is fully committed to ensuring justice for every victim of rape and holding perpetrators accountable."

The Janakantha report reportedly contained references to multiple rape incidents, including cases from different parts of the country, but failed to verify whether they all occurred within the claimed 65-hour period. Officials from the Press Wing emphasized that misreporting such sensitive issues could undermine public trust and create unnecessary panic.

Authorities have urged the media to verify their sources carefully before publishing reports on serious crimes, ensuring that factual accuracy is maintained to uphold responsible journalism.
