Detective Police Detain Former SEC Chairman Shibli Rubaiyat in Dhanmondi

Detective police have detained Shibli Rubaiyat Ul Islam, the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

He was apprehended on Tuesday evening and brought to Dhanmondi Police Station, said Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallick of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Shibli resigned as the SEC chairman on Aug 10 last year, following a series of leadership changes in both public and private institutions after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

He had assumed the role of SEC chairman on May 17, 2020, for a four-year term.

Before the expiration of his term, in April 2024, he was reappointed for another four years.

With over two decades of experience in finance, banking, and insurance education, Shibli also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies at Dhaka University.

He has also been named as an accused in several lawsuits related to the July Movement.
