A Dhaka court has ordered the attachment of 16 immovable properties belonging to Saiful Alam, the head of S Alam Group, and 11 of his family members.
In addition, 87 bank accounts of eight family members have been ordered to be frozen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zakir Hossain Galib delivered the verdict on Tuesday following a plea filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC.
ACC Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir told bdnews24.com that the ACC Deputy Director Abu Sayeed filed two separate applications seeking the attachment of S Alam’s immovable properties and the freezing of movable assets.
He added that lawyer Rezaul Haque Reza represented the commission during the hearing.
ACC Court Inspector Amir Hossain confirmed that the investigation into the affected members of the S Alam family is ongoing.
The ACC alleged that Saiful and his family members were involved in the laundering of $100 million to countries such as Singapore, the British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, and others.
During the investigation, details of properties reportedly linked to their interests were uncovered.
To prevent the transfer or misuse of these assets, the graft watchdog sought a court order for their attachment.
Those affected by the order are Saiful Alam's wife Farzana Parveen; mother Chemon Ara Begum; brothers Mohammad Abdullah Hasan, Osman Goni, Rashedul Alam, Shahidul Alam; Saiful’s three sons Ahsanul Alam, Ashraful Alam Mahir, and Asadul Alam; Osman’s wife Farzana Begum; and his brother Abdus Samad’s wife Shah Ferdana.
The properties include a 10-storey S Alam Tower in Gulshan, a six-storey building with one bigha, or or 0.1337 hectares, of land in Dhanmondi, a four-storey building with 11.88 decimals of land in Dhanmondi Lake Circus, A 2,658 square-foot flat in Gulshan, 0.7888 acres, or 0.3189 hectares, of land in Gulshan-2, a seven-storey building in Uttara Residential Area, a plot of 103.3 kathas, or 1.708 hectares, land in Bashundhara Residential Area,
Separate plots of land: 1.72 acres, or 0.6968 hectares, 96 katha, or 0.575 hectares, 1.9536 acres, or 0.7904 hectares, 11.1061 bighas, or 1.486 hectares, and 131.04 katha, or 0.787 hectares.
The documented value of these properties is Tk 2 billion.
BANK ACCOUNTS WITH OVER 250MN
A total of Tk 257.79 million has been deposited in 87 bank accounts linked to the S Alam family's interests across multiple branches of Union Bank Limited and Global Islami Bank.
Of this, Tk 122.48 million is held in 19 accounts in Union Bank branches, while Tk 135.31 million is deposited in 68 accounts across Global Islami Bank.
Those affected by the court's freeze order include Saiful, his brother Abdullah, Osman, Rashedul, his son Ahsanul Alam, and Osman’s wife, Farzan.
On Oct 7 2024, the court imposed a travel ban on Saiful and 13 of his family members.
