The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested former food minister Qamrul Islam from Uttara on Monday, according to Mohammad Talebur Rahman, the deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media Wing.

Legal action is being taken against the influential leader of the deposed Awami League, but Talebur did not specify in which case Qamrul had been arrested.

Qamrul Islam, a senior politician from the Awami League, served as Bangladesh’s Minister of Food during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. Known for his vocal support of the party and his involvement in key national issues, Qamrul played a prominent role in shaping policies to address food security and distribution challenges.

However, his career has been marred by controversy, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the food sector. He faced criticism over irregularities in rice procurement and subsidy programs, which opposition parties and watchdog groups accused of benefiting party loyalists.

Qamrul Islam also drew attention for his combative rhetoric, often targeting opposition leaders and activists. His controversial remarks on judicial matters, including comments on the judiciary's role in political cases, sparked significant public and legal debates.

Despite his achievements in political mobilization and policymaking, his legacy remains polarizing, with supporters praising his dedication to the Awami League and critics questioning his ethics and transparency. His recent arrest marks a dramatic turn in his political journey, highlighting ongoing scrutiny over corruption and governance issues in Bangladesh.
