The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a student accused of hacking Facebook accounts, gathering sensitive images, and blackmailing young women for financial gain.
Md. Fazle Hasan Anik, a 24-year-old student from a private university's engineering department, allegedly used the extorted money to cover personal expenses, including those of his girlfriend.
Over the past two years, he is reported to have hacked more than 50 Facebook accounts, targeting at least 15 victims for extortion.
The CID’s Cyber Police Center conducted a raid on Sunday in Uttara Sector 10, recovering a mobile phone and a portable hard drive believed to have been used in the crimes.
During a briefing at CID headquarters on Monday, October 28, DIG SN Md. Nazrul Islam provided further details, highlighting that Anik’s actions caused significant psychological and financial distress among his victims.
Investigations revealed that Anik employed phishing tactics, sending malicious links via Facebook Messenger to trick victims into unknowingly providing their login credentials. After gaining access to their accounts, he would retrieve private photos and videos and then use these to coerce victims into making payments through untraceable methods, primarily cryptocurrency via Binance.
Some victims were also pressured to make payments through mobile financial services and super shops under Anik’s instructions to further avoid detection.
DIG SN Md. Nazrul Islam explained that Anik utilized various evasion tactics to avoid direct transactions in mobile wallets, attempting to escape scrutiny. However, CID was able to trace him using advanced technology. Anik is currently in custody, and the CID is pursuing further legal action as more complaints about his extortion practices emerge.
