The joint forces, led by the Bangladesh Army, have detained 45 individuals following a series of violent incidents, including clashes, extortion, and robberies in the Mohammadpur area of the capital.
“A total of 45 suspected robbers, extortionists, and members of juvenile gangs were arrested during a coordinated operation involving army personnel, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2), and police at Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan, and Navodaya Housing in Mohammadpur”, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued on Sunday.
The Bangladesh Army is committed to operating with impartiality and professionalism amid the current situation in the country, aiming to prevent extrajudicial activities while upholding the rule of law and enhancing overall security for the public and vital government facilities.
Even since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, there has been a marked increase in crime and violence in Dhaka's Mohammadpur area, along with many other areas.
On Friday night, in Bosila's Garden City, machete-wielding robbers wearing masks looted a supermarket. On Saturday night, a shooting incident left three people injured at the Geneva Camp. Last week, criminals looted a company vehicle carrying nearly Tk 12 lakh at gunpoint at the Mohammadia Housing Ltd area.
A group of students and leaders of various social organisations Saturday brought a rally to ensure law and order situation in their area and gave the police 72 hours to address the rising incidents of mugging in the capital's Mohammadpur area. They went to Mohammadpur Police Station this evening and raised the issue of "police inaction" with Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ziaul Haque.

Acknowledging police failure, ADC Zia said, "My police station is always short on manpower. There is also a shortage of vehicles.
The operation was strategically planned to alleviate the concerns of residents in Mohammadpur, who have been feeling increasingly insecure in recent times. During the raid, authorities apprehended 45 alleged criminals and seized nine domestic sharp weapons.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies under the Mohammadpur, Adabar, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations have detained 152 criminals in recent operations, recovering 18 firearms, 271 rounds of ammunition, 172 various domestic and foreign weapons, one grenade, and a substantial quantity of narcotics.
Following preliminary interrogations, the detainees were handed over to the respective police stations.
Since the fall of the Awami League government, Mohammadpur has become one of the most crime-ridden areas in the capital, with incidents of gunfire, robbery, theft, and armed assaults becoming commonplace. In the past month alone, at least three individuals have been killed in shootouts, and several others have sustained injuries due to conflicts related to illegal drug dealings. A video of armed individuals robbing a mini-supermarket in Basila circulated on social media on Friday night.
This operation is part of regular patrolling and operations conducted by the joint forces under the 'In Aid to Civil Power' initiative, following directives from the current interim government.
