The Detective Branch of police has been accused of vandalizing and looting the residence of former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, who is currently imprisoned following his arrest in Dhaka.
Abul Hossain, the security guard at the property, claimed that a group of 10 to 15 individuals posing as police detectives gained entry into the house in Siddheswari by cutting the grill and breaking the lock of the apartment. He alleged that they ransacked the premises around 2 a.m. on Sunday, according to bdnews24.com.
A representative from Gazi Group immediately reported the suspicious “forced entry by police” at the Ramna Police Station late that night.
In his words, Ramna police chief Golam Faruq said the DB police went there in an operation.
“The group broke the locks of every room of the house, destroyed everything and took 2-3 bags full of belongings," Abul said.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or DMP, officials shared conflicting views over the incident - one admitting it while another claiming they did not know anything.
On Aug 24, Gazi was arrested and remanded in a case filed over the deaths during the movement. He is still behind bars.
DMP’s Additional Commissioner (crime) Israil Howlader told bdnews24.com, "Police did not visit the house according to what I know.”
However, DMP spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman said, “It was a routine operation of DB police.”
The officer, however, did not say why this ‘routine operation’ and what goods were brought.
When asked about the entry by cutting the grill and looting possessions, he said: “I don't know about these things.”
