The government has formed up a four-member task force to investigate the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi.

This task force was formed following an order from the High Court, as stated in a circular issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday. The task force has the flexibility to co-opt additional members if deemed necessary.

The notification mandates the task force to submit its findings within six months. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) will serve as the convener of the task force; however, the names of the other members have not been disclosed.

The task force will include one representative of no lower rank than the additional deputy inspector general (DIG) from Police Headquarters, one representative of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the same rank, and one representative at the rank of RAB director.

Sagar, the News Editor of Maasranga Television, and Runi, a Senior Reporter at ATN Bangla, were brutally stabbed to death on February 12, 2012, in the bedroom of their rented flat in Dhaka's Rajabazar. At the time of the incident, their only son, Mahir Sarwar Megh, was just five years old and was present in the home.

Runi’s brother, Roman, filed a case with the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station following the tragic event. The investigation was initially handled by the police station but was transferred three days later to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on April 18, 2012.

Despite a pledge from the then Home Minister to uncover the killers within 48 hours of the murder, justice has remained elusive for over a decade.
