Express Report
  16 Oct 2024, 04:39

Faruk Khan, the Awami League Presidium member and former civil aviation and tourism minister, has been arrested. He has been kept at the Detective Branch office of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

‘Summit Group’ – a notable force in Bangladesh’s power and energy sector – is Faruk’s family business.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested him from the Dhaka Cantonment area late on Monday night. RAB spokesman Lt Col Munim Ferdous says that police will provide the details on the arrest to the media.

Mohammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the DMP Public Relations Division, says that Faruk is currently in DB custody.

Several cases were filed against Faruk Khan relating to incidents of the movement of Students Against Discrimination after the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August.

Summit Group, one of Bangladesh's leading conglomerates, has recently come under scrutiny due to allegations of corruption involving financial irregularities and questionable business practices.

Accusations have emerged suggesting that the company engaged in unethical dealings, including bribery and collusion with government officials to secure lucrative contracts in sectors such as power and infrastructure. These allegations have sparked widespread public concern and prompted calls for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in the corporate sector.

As the situation unfolds, Summit Group's reputation and its future operations hang in the balance, drawing attention from both regulatory authorities and the media.
