Former agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque arrested

Former agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque has been arrested following the detention of Awami League MPs and ministers after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

The influential Awami League leader was placed under arrest in Dhaka’s Eskaton area, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or DMP, said in a statement on Monday.

On Sept 26, a lawsuit was filed against 117 people, including Awami League’s Advisory Council member Razzaque, on charges of attacking a procession in Tangail's Madhupur during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

One Zahid Hasan of Madhupur Upazila initiated the case.

Earlier on Aug 19, a murder case was filed against 56 people, including Razzaque and former state minister for commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu.

On the day of the Awami League government’s collapse in the mass uprising, a school student named Maruf Mia was killed in a march on Aug 5. His mother Mosammat Morsheda initiated the case.

Razzaque was elected with the Awami League ticket from the Tangail-1 seat in the 2001, 2008, 2014, and 2018 elections.

He served as food minister after the ninth parliamentary elections. He got the portfolio for the agriculture ministry after the 11th national elections.
