The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Detective Branch of police have arrested 11 individuals in connection with the heist in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, where the robbers disguised themselves in Army and RAB uniforms. The authorities also recovered Tk 920,000 and gold jewellery during the arrests.
Among those apprehended are five former Army and Air Force personnel, according to RAB spokesperson Lt Col Md Munim Ferdous, who made the statement on Sunday.
Attempts are under way to arrest the other criminals, he said, disclosing information about the recovery of stolen Tk 700,000, some gold ornaments, and a microbus used in the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the force had also arrested three suspects and recovered Tk 220,000, gold jewellery and two looted iPhones.
The three men detained by police are – Shariful Islam Tushar, Zakir Hossain and Md Masudur Rahman. They have been shown arrested in the robbery case filed with Mohammedpur Police.
On Saturday, Tk 7.5 million and 70 bhori [1 bhori=11.66 grams] of gold were stolen during a robbery that took place at a house near the junction of three roads in Mohammadpur.
On Saturday, Mohammadpur Police Station chief Ali Iftekhar Hasan said the attendant of the house had opened the gate as the criminals were wearing army and RAB uniforms along with masks on their faces. The perpetrators went to Abu Bakr’s flat on the second floor afterwards.
"The criminals dressed in army uniforms appeared so convincingly that it was impossible to tell they were not real army officers. Even the helmets they wore raised no suspicion", he said.
The victim, Abu Bakr, said, “Once inside, they claimed they were there to confiscate my licensed weapon because I had not submitted it to the police station. Although I informed them that the weapon had already been deposited, they searched the almirah and took the money and gold jewellery.
“They then moved to my office, located in a corner of the apartment, and used the same method to steal money from there. They stayed for about an hour and left around 4:15 am.”
Bakr added that the robbers used two microbuses and two private cars, with around 15 to 20 people entering the house while some remained outside.
