A third of the firearms and ammunition looted from police stations following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government has still not been recovered.

As of Thursday, 3,933 weapons have been recovered, according to the home ministry.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said 5,818 types of weapons were stolen from different police stations and installations. Of these, 1,885 weapons are still missing.

A joint operation is ongoing nationwide to recover these looted weapons and ammunition.

Currently, almost half of the looted ammunition remains unaccounted for, with 294,405 rounds still missing out of a total of 607,262.

The recovery efforts have thus far accounted for 312,857 rounds of ammunition.

The figures for recovered or returned weapons and ammunition were provided by the Police Headquarters, Faisal Hasan, a spokesperson for the ministry, said.

Joint forces are also working to recover unregistered firearms whose licences were suspended. Information on the recovery of these weapons is not yet available, he added.

On Saturday evening, the Police Headquarters reported that the joint operations, which began at midnight on Sept 3, had recovered 53 illegal weapons.

These include two revolvers, 18 pistols, two rifles, one Chinese rifle, three LGs, three guns, one AK-47, six shooter guns, 11 shotguns, three SBBLs, one airgun, one gas gun and one pipe gun.

The deadline for returning looted police firearms was Sept 3.

The operation to retrieve them began at midnight that same day.

The home ministry and Police Headquarters have not yet provided updates on recoveries made after Sept 5.

The latest figures indicate that among the unrecovered firearms are 296 Chinese rifles, 60 SMG Chinese rifles, 825 pistols, and 567 shotguns.

In addition, 294,405 rounds of ammunition, 8,811 tear shells, and 2,564 stun grenades remain missing.
