  18 Feb 2025, 01:09

The government will start selling beef, mutton, chicken, eggs, and milk at affordable prices across the country, including 25 designated points in the capital, from the first day of Ramadan.

The initiative will be launched at 10:30 am on Feb 28 at the Siraj Mia Memorial Model School in Dhaka's Merul Badda ahead of the month of fasting, according to Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter.

The sales will run until the 28th day of Ramadan.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Farida highlighted the government’s efforts to stabilise the supply and prices of essential food items during Ramadan to ease the financial strain on consumers.

“To ensure steady availability and fair pricing of meat, eggs, and milk throughout Ramadan, mobile sale operations will be conducted from the first to the 28th day of Ramadan,” she said. “Dressed broiler chicken, eggs, pasteurised milk, and beef will be sold in Dhaka, while similar items, including mutton, will be available across the country at subsidised rates.”

Dressed broiler chicken will cost Tk 250 per kg, pasteurised milk Tk 80 per litre, eggs Tk 114 per dozen, and beef Tk 650 per kg under the initiative.

The government is planning to sell at least 60,000 eggs, 6,000 litres of pasteurised milk, 2,000 kg of dressed broiler chicken, and 2,000-2,500 kg of beef daily, Akhter said.

She added that 25 locations across Dhaka have been designated for selling these food products at reduced prices.

“Priority has been given to areas where public participation was high during the July Uprising, and arrangements have also been made to supply these products in slum areas,” she said.
