Express Report
  27 Feb 2025, 02:15
Bangladesh's interim government adviser and key student leader Nahid Islam has resigned, citing his commitment to student interests.

Mohammad Nahid Islam has disclosed his financial records after stepping down as an advisor to the interim government to take on a leadership role in a new political party.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Nahid said he had no bank account before becoming an advisor. “I had no bank account before taking office as an advisor. On Aug 21, I opened a government-designated account with Sonali Bank to receive my honorarium,” Nahid wrote in his post.

He presented transaction records from Aug 21, 2024, to Feb 26, 2025, showing deposits of over Tk 10.07 million and withdrawals of Tk 996,188 during his six months and five days in office. " I have no other bank accounts apart from this one", Nahid said.

Nahid also disclosed the financial details of his secretary, saying the latter had Tk 36,028 in an Islami Bank Bangladesh account and had not acquired any property under his name or his family’s during his tenure.

He added that full financial records for all relevant personnel, including his private office staff, are properly documented and can be made public if necessary.

Until his resignation on Tuesday, he was responsible for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT.

The interim government has since reassigned his former portfolio, with student representative Mahfuj Alam now overseeing the information ministry, while Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has retained the telecom and ICT portfolio.

“During my tenure, neither I nor any member of my family (wife, mother, or father) owned or purchased any land or flats anywhere in Bangladesh,” he wrote.

Nahid also reminded readers that under the Right to Information Act, 2009, such financial records can be verified through any government office in Bangladesh.

The new political party, formed by key leaders of the July Uprising that ousted the Awami League government, is set to formally announce its convening committee on Feb 28.

Nahid played a central role in the 36-day movement that forced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to leave the country.

At the time, he was a coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, taking an active role in organising protests and leading demonstrations on the streets.

His activism even landed him in the secret detention cell known as "Ayna Ghor".

Nahid, also known by his nickname Fahim, holds a bachelor's and master’s degree in sociology from Dhaka University.

He hails from South Banasree in Dhaka’s Khilgaon.

Two years ago, Nahid served as the central member secretary of Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti or Democratic Student Power, a student group founded by former Dhaka University Central Students' Union social services secretary Akhtar Hossain.

Many of its members later played key roles in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
