Dhaka, Beijing Set Sights on 'New Chapter of Cooperation' During Foreign Adviser's First Bilateral Visit

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain's highly anticipated visit to China is set to reinforce the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between Bangladesh and China, marking a renewed commitment to advancing their cooperation. The visit is expected to open a "new chapter of cooperation" between the two nations, underscoring their shared optimism for strengthening bilateral ties.

During the visit, which will take place from January 20 to 24, the top diplomats of both countries are anticipated to officially launch the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ahead of the visit, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen met with Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the Ministry on Thursday. The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming visit, with both sides emphasizing its significance as it marks Foreign Adviser Hossain's first official bilateral trip of the year.

Ambassador Wen expressed China's sincere appreciation for Bangladesh's steadfast support of the One-China Policy, reiterating China's firm respect for Bangladesh's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also reaffirmed China's ongoing support for Bangladesh's stability, democratic transition, and reforms.

The Ambassador highlighted the importance of further enhancing economic and strategic cooperation, particularly in key projects such as the China Economic Zone in Chattogram and efforts to strengthen regional connectivity. He also stressed the need for practical bilateral collaboration in areas like digital connectivity and port modernization.

The discussions also touched on regional and global issues, with a focus on the ongoing Rohingya crisis. Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin conveyed Bangladesh's appreciation for China's role in facilitating dialogue on the crisis and urged continued support from China to ensure the early repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals. Both sides reiterated their shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

The meeting also explored the potential for future exchanges of visits, agreeing that such interactions will further solidify bilateral relations and foster greater cooperation in areas like trade, infrastructure, and regional connectivity.
