The BNP has urged the interim government to hold national elections “above all else,” arguing that prolonging the process would further deprive people of their right to vote.

The party’s demand was outlined in a statement released on Friday following an extended meeting held a day earlier at the LD Hall of the parliament complex.

"BNP is calling on the interim government to complete the necessary reforms and hold national parliamentary elections above all else,” the statement read.

The gathering, which lasted from 11 am to 11:30 pm, brought together approximately 3,500 party leaders, including senior figures from BNP’s metropolitan, district, Upazila, and municipal committees.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the meeting virtually from London.

“All organs and associate organisations of BNP have been instructed to engage with the public through people-friendly initiatives, fostering goodwill through both words and actions,” the statement said.

The party also issued “strict instructions” for party members to avoid internal disputes and actions detrimental to the people’s interests.

"The extended meeting believes that democracy can only be established through voting and electing representatives through a free, fair and impartial parliamentary election.”

"The people of the country have been deprived of this fundamental right for almost a decade and a half. As a result, no excuse to prolong this deprivation is acceptable."

The BNP also expressed alarm over the sharp rise in commodity prices and a worsening law-and-order in the country.

The statement condemned what it called the “syndicate of the fallen government” and urged collective resistance against price manipulation and political repression.
