A Jamaat-e-Islami activist has been run over and killed by a bus while attempting to clear up traffic congestion blocking a convoy carrying the party’s chief.

The incident occurred on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway in the Syedpur area of Cumilla’s Lalmai Upazila, according to Md Shah Alam, chief of Lalmai Police Sttaion.

The deceased, 53-year-old Jashim Uddin, hailed from Syedpur’s Paschim Para area in the Upazila. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.

An eyewitness reported that a convoy of four vehicles carrying Jamaat-e-Ameer was traveling to Lakshmipur when it got stuck in traffic in Bagmara’s Uttarbazar area. In an attempt to clear the congestion, Jamaat activists took to the road.

Suddenly, a speeding Dhaka-bound Tisha Paribahan bus struck Jamaat activist Jashim Uddin while he was directing traffic. The impact crushed his head, causing him to bleed out and die on the spot.

Maulana Imam Hossain, secretary of the Lalmai Upazila Jamaat unit, stated, “The Jamaat-e-Ameer was on his way to Lakshmipur after holding a public meeting at a sand field in Bagmara’s Uttar Bazar area. His convoy got stuck in traffic just before his arrival.”

He added, “I was among 15-20 activists trying to clear the congestion. Jashim Uddin was tragically run over and killed by a bus after we had left for the public meeting with the Jamaat-e-Ameer.”

Lalmai police official Alam confirmed the tragic incident.
