National Citizens’ Committee Convener Nasir Uddin Patwary has said a new student-led group will be launched in February under the leadership of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the committee.

A public opinion survey on the matter is currently under way, he said at a media briefing after the party meets with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka’s Bailey Road on Saturday.

“The political line of ‘our’ group will be the fight to draft a new constitution.”

Representatives of 26 political parties, including the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami, attended the meeting from 3pm to 6pm.

"The government has initiated the fight for reforms and we have launched ours for a new constitution," the Citizens’ Committee convener said.

"We have said that the July Charter has to be formulated through a legal process so that the successive governments which will take over remain obliged to continue [this] until the last working day.

“The liberation of the people will be implied if we can present a new constitution for Bangladesh,” he said.
