Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam has called for a ban on what he said was “underground politics” in all educational institutions in Bangladesh.

With the fall of “the authoritarian Hasina”, no reality for underground politics exists in Bangladesh, he said at the “March for Justice” event at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

However, he refrained from naming any organisation pursuing “underground politics”.

"Still, if any political party is engaged in underground politics, we will assume that they are again hatching a conspiracy like they did in 1971.”

Pointing to the July Proclamation, Rakibul warned that any history not recognising “the 15 years of sacrifice, labour, and struggle of Chhatra Dal will be thrown into the dustbin”.

The “March for Justice” event began at 3pm outside the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh.

Leaders and activists of the BNP front’s units, including those of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, and Dhaka metropolis, among others took part in the rally.

Later, the march moved through Shahbagh and gathered at the Shaheed Minar.

The Chhatra Dal president said: "All political parties became united under the leadership of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in July-August. We are still united and will remain so against fascism.

"But those who want to make the July-August movement their own should play a responsible role. They should not do anything that breaks the unity."

About the Awami League’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, he said: "No university administration, including Dhaka University, is showing the least willingness to bring them to justice. Only the so-called ban on Chhatra League is insufficient.”

"Investigation panels have been formed at different campuses, including DU and JU, to identify those who attacked students during the July-August uprising. We haven't seen a single report in five and a half months.

"The probe report against the Chhatra League should be submitted as soon as possible to bring them to book with their studentship cancelled.

“We are not giving any ultimatum. But we are demanding justice. The more you delay, the easier their rehabilitation process will be."

Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasiruddin Nasir said, "The murderous organisation that has destroyed democracy for the last 15 and a half years has been banned under the anti-terrorism law. But the interim government has not arrested any top Chhatra League criminal yet."

Ganesh Chandra Roy, president of the DU unit of the organisation, said: "The supporters of autocracy are still there on different campuses. If those who helped Hasina remain, the spirit of July-August will be destroyed."
