BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Sunday stressed the urgent need for holding elections to ensure the country’s stability and progress. Speaking at a discussion marking the 48th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani at the Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul warned that Bangladesh would face deeper crises as long as the interim government, lacking a popular mandate, remains in power.
“The country will continue to spiral into crisis as long as the unelected interim government remains in charge,” Fakhrul stated. “It is essential that elections are held as soon as possible, after completing necessary reforms.”
The discussion was organized by BNP's national committee to observe Bhasani’s death anniversary, with BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu chairing the event. Central leaders, including Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Abdus Salam Azad, Helen Jerin Khan, Asadul Karim, and Nazmul Haque, also participated.
Fakhrul reiterated the BNP's position on electoral reforms, emphasizing that the interim government should prioritize holding elections promptly. "Reforms are necessary, but they should not be delayed to the point where they fuel public mistrust," he said.
On BNP's proposed governance reforms, Fakhrul advocated for a bicameral parliament and a limit on the number of terms a person can serve as prime minister.
He also called on the interim government to tackle market syndicates and reduce the prices of essential goods, which have become a significant burden on the public.
Paying tribute to Maulana Bhasani, Fakhrul hailed him as an extraordinary leader who rose from humble beginnings to become a political icon through his dedication and sacrifice.
