BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir voiced strong opposition on Sunday to any bans on political parties imposed by the interim government. "Who are we to ban political parties? It's the people of the country who will decide this," he stated, addressing reporters after a memorial program for Sabihuddin Ahmed, a former adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, held at BRAC Center Inn.

Fakhrul's comments were in response to calls from certain quarters for a ban on the Jatiyo Party. He criticized the politicization of such demands, describing it as part of a broader plot to destabilize the nation and sow uncertainty about its future.

Reflecting on Sabihuddin's legacy, Fakhrul praised him as a patriot who dedicated his life to the people and democracy. "He will always be remembered with respect and love," he said, noting Sabihuddin’s passion for sports and his desire to see Bangladesh free from fascism.

The recent attack and vandalism at the Jatiya Party's central office have drawn reactions from various political factions, with the BNP condemning the violence as an unnecessary provocation in the current political climate. The BNP regards these actions as part of a conspiracy to destabilize the country amid growing tensions surrounding the interim government.

The recent attack on JP office

The incident has sparked concern, occurring just three months after the interim government assumed office. Many are questioning the motivations behind these attacks, while the Jatiya Party faces increased scrutiny.

Despite the unrest, the Jatiya Party had planned a rally, which was met with a counter-demonstration organized by anti-fascism students, workers, and citizens. In light of the escalating tensions, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police imposed restrictions on gatherings near the Jatiya Party office, leading both sides to cancel their events.

Notable figures at the memorial program included Finance Adviser Salehiddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, and The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam.
