27 dead from floods in 11 districts in Bangladesh

More than 5.6 million people have been affected by the floods, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief says

A total of 27 people have died from the floods in 11 districts in Bangladesh, while over 5.6 million people have been affected.

The details were provided in an update on the flooding situation by KM Ali Reza, additional secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, at 1pm on Tuesday.

On Monday, the update had listed 23 deaths and nearly 5.7 million affected by the floods.

At a press conference, the additional secretary said: “There is flooding in 74 Upazilas of 11 districts and damage to 541 unions and municipalities.”

“The water has trapped 1,207,429 families. The number of people affected by the floods is 5,619,375.”

Twenty-seven people have died and two are missing, he said.

“Ten in Cumilla, one in Feni, five in Chattogram, one in Khagrachhari, five in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur, and three in Cox’s Bazar.”

“A total of 3,886 shelters have been opened to provide refuge to a total of 509,728 people and 34,421 heads of livestock.”

A total of 620 medical teams are on duty to provide treatment to those hurt in 11 districts.

Reza said, "All the districts of the country have a sufficient stock of relief materials. Relief distribution is continuing from all levels, public and private, in flood-affected areas.”

"The deputy commissioners of the flood-affected districts have been given the necessary instructions to coordinate with the coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, the Army, the Navy, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, medical teams and other volunteers."
