Zia Established Multi-party Democracy in Bangladesh: Speakers

Speakers at a discussion marking the 89th birth anniversary of former president Ziaur Rahman said the former President of Bangladesh, is credited with establishing multi-party democracy in the country after the end of military rule.

In 1979, he lifted the ban on political parties, allowing a return to democratic processes. This move empowered a wide array of political groups, culminating in the formation of various parties that could contest elections. Zia’s decision to reintroduce multi-party politics marked a pivotal shift from one-party rule, enabling a more inclusive and competitive political environment. His efforts laid the groundwork for the democratic structure that continues to shape Bangladesh’s political landscape today.

The discussion was organised by Shaheed Zia Gabeshona Parishad at Jatiya Press Club in the city.

On the occasion of the 89th birth anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club today Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University spoke as the chief guest at the discussion meeting organized by Shahid Zia Research Council. Anwarullah Chowdhury. 

Former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury on Friday said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had established multi-party democracy in the country. "Zia had played an important role in the needs of the nation through establishing democracy in 1975," he said.
 
Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury said the then Awami League (AL) government had destroyed democracy by establishing the Baksal. General Zia was a unique person as he worked to establish people-oriented development and started a village government system. 

The ousted AL government tortured BNP leaders and activists for 17 years, he said adding that they robbed the rights of the people. 

Prof. Anwarullah hoped that the BNP would form a government through the next national election and that the people would get back their rights. 

He unveiled the cover of a book titled 'Zia Somogro' at the function.

Prayer for BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's recovery was also offered in the event. 

President of Shaheed Zia Gabeshona Parishad Anisur Rahman Anis presided over the discussion and its joint secretary Mukit Khan Juel conducted it.

BNP's leader Belal Ahmed, vice-president of the organisation Ruhul Amin, editor of Zia Somogro Golam Quader, former leader of Chhatra Dal Talukder Rumi, UK unit Mohila Dal member secretary Angona Alam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
