Chief Advisor's Press Wing Vows to Defend Free Press Against Any Attacks

The interim government will not tolerate any assault on any media outlet, Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam warned Friday.

"Any attack on media freedom will not be tolerated, as the government firmly upholds the principle of press freedom," Alam declared on Friday. during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

"We will not tolerate any assault on any newspaper or media outlet. Our commitment to press freedom is unwavering," he warned.

Alam further asserted that neither the interim government nor any of its agencies had ever contacted anyone regarding a news report. "There has not been a single such instance," he stated, adding that when discrepancies were noticed in a report, the government simply encouraged the concerned individual to reconsider the content.

The press secretary also clarified that the interim government had not shut down any newspapers, TV stations, or online media outlets.

Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir were also present at the briefing.

In response to a question, Azad acknowledged the recent statement from the Editors' Council and said the government had carefully reviewed it.

"The government is taking the issue seriously and is committed to addressing any concerns if individuals face difficulties," Azad assured.

The Editors' Council had recently expressed grave concern, noting that press freedom in the country continues to face threats from certain societal elements, despite the interim government’s assurances to protect it.
