The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) staged a protest rally in the city Tuesday, presenting a five-point demand that includes terminating the current constitution, removing President Mohammed Shahabuddin, and banning the Bangladesh Chhatra League as a terrorist organization.
Speaking at the rally held at the Central Shaheed Minar, the movement’s leaders also called for declaring the last three national parliamentary elections invalid and issuing a 'Proclamation of Republic' based on the ideals of the July Revolution.
“These five demands must be fulfilled within the week,” stated Hasnat Abdullah, a key coordinator of ADSM, which led the mass uprising of students and citizens.
Hasnat warned that if the demands are not met by Thursday, they will take to the streets again.
"A new constitution, inspired by the spirit of the July Revolution, must replace the current one. Bangladesh Chhatra League should be banned as a terrorist organization within the week," he asserted.
Hasnat further demanded President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation, urging that a Proclamation of Republic be announced within the week, guided by the principles of the July Revolution, with governance based on the collective will of all functional political organizations.
He also called for the annulment of the last three national parliamentary elections (2014, 2018, and 2024), arguing that those who were elected through these elections should have their wealth seized and face legal action, permanently barring them from participating in future elections.
Hasnat condemned the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and all cultural organizations and media aligned with the ideology of 'Mujibbad,' stating that they perpetuate fascism and must be eradicated from Bangladesh.
Nasir Uddin Patwary, convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, announced that the committee would launch a nationwide movement, with support from stakeholders, if the government fails to begin drafting a new constitution this month in consultation with national parties, replacing the current 'Bakshali' constitution of 1972.
ADSM coordinator Sarjis Alam criticized President Shahabuddin’s comments regarding ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, saying, “The President will have to flee the country just as Sheikh Hasina did. If any fascist emerges from hiding, the united student-citizen movement will resist them.”
ADSM coordinator Abu Baker Majumder added, "The core ideology of fascism is ‘Mujibbad,’ and the Chhatra League has been at the forefront of establishing this fascism during the Awami League regime. Over the past 15 years, they have destabilized the country, and they must be banned."
Other speakers at the rally included ADSM coordinators Lutfar Rahman, Arif Sohail, Rifat Rashid, and student leader Ashrefa Khatun.
