Passengers left the station without returning 200,000 tickets used in a single journey on the Dhaka Metro Rail.
Citing passengers’ suffering due to the lack of tickets, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, or DMTCL, made a request to return them. The metro rail operator’s Managing Director Mohammad Abdur Rouf appealed at a media briefing at the organisation’s office in Dhaka’s Uttara on Monday.
Journalists were invited to join the briefing over the announcement on the resumption of services from Tuesday at the Mirpur-10 metro station, which was affected by vandalism during the mass uprising.
Rouf said a total of 248,000 tickets were purchased for single journeys on the metro rail. Around 13,000 of them were damaged and 200,000 were lost.
“Lost means the passengers took them away instead of returning them to the station at different times. This is a criminal offence.”
The metro rail offers two types of passenger tickets - single-use tickets and long-term MRT passes. The passengers with the latter can board the train only by recharging the pass. The maximum limit for the recharge is Tk 10,000.”
The long-term passes also offer a 10 per cent discount. The fare is automatically deducted from the punching machine itself.
On the other hand, passengers have to insert single-use tickets while leaving the station. However, many took the opportunity to leave the station with others who had inserted the tickets into the machine.
In multiple Facebook groups based on Dhaka metro, passengers often post funny or wishful thinking about how to take the ticket home. One passenger even boasted of taking multiple tickets in this way.
Requesting to return these tickets, the DMTCL MD said, “Taking single-journey tickets out of the station is a criminal offence. These cards cannot be used for any other purpose. So we request you to return these cards to the nearest station. This will save the state from financial loss."
The passenger’s tendency to take out the tickets caused suffering to others. Some vending machines remain closed due to the lack of tickets, leaving passengers in a long wait.
Rouf said the authorities are set to take measures to solve the issues tied to the recharge of MRT passes only at the stations.
“An app is being prepared for MRT recharge from home. The agreement will be finalised soon. We expect to share the good news soon.”
