A man has been killed amid clashes between quota protesters and police in Dhaka’s Badda area.

The victim was identified as Dulal Matbar, a microbus driver in his fifties.

His body was brought to the Farazy Hospital in Banasree with a bullet wound in his chest, according to the hospital’s Deputy General Manager Md Rubel Hossain.

Several others injured in the clashes are also receiving treatment, he said.

“We have received a dead body,” Rubel said. “We have written down his name and address. His name is Dulal Matbar and he was a microbus driver. A bullet hit him in the chest. He was likely a pedestrian. His sons came and took the body after hearing of the incident. Dulal Matbar hails from Patuakhali.”

“Many people with injuries have come to the hospital. They include students and pedestrians. We are treating everyone.”

After clashes between quota reform protesters, police and pro-Awami League factions over the past two days, the protesters declared a 'complete shutdown' programme on Thursday.

The programme has led to a public transport crisis in the capital since the morning, causing severe difficulties for working-class people.

Traffic on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway has been halted due to blockades at Shanir Akhra and Matuail Road. Reports of clashes between protesters and police have come in from BRAC University and other areas.
