Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called again for swift national elections, urging the interim government to first address the "garbage" left behind by the previous Awami League regime.
Speaking at a ceremony for distributing educational materials and corrugated iron sheets to flood victims in Fulgazi upazila Wednesday, Mirza Fakhrul emphasised that the interim government had already made significant progress in the past three months. He expressed hope that the government would hold elections as soon as possible, once the mess left by the Awami League is cleared.
The event was held at the ancestral home of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in Sreepur, Fulgazi. Mirza Fakhrul praised Khaleda Zia, describing her as a “mother” to the people of Bangladesh. He acknowledged her long-standing struggle for democracy and human rights, stating that she had dedicated her life to realizing the democratic rights of the people.
Referring to the HM Ershad era when power was snatched from the people, Fakhrul recalled how Khaleda Zia led the youth in a movement to reclaim democracy. He lauded her efforts to improve the nation during her tenure as Prime Minister, including making education free for students and creating job opportunities for women.
However, Fakhrul sharply criticized the Awami League government for imprisoning Khaleda Zia in what he called a politically motivated campaign of retribution. He recounted her suffering in a damp, cramped jail cell, deprived of proper rest and nutrition, which led to her declining health. Despite this, he noted, Khaleda Zia never wavered from her commitment to justice and continues to stand strong against the oppression she faced.
"She served six years in jail but did not budge from her stance against injustice," Fakhrul said, highlighting her resilience despite the hardships she endured. In contrast, he claimed, the Awami League leaders responsible for repression and violence against the people have fled, evading accountability.
The program was chaired by Fulgazi Upazila BNP Convener Fakhrul Alam Swapan, with several BNP leaders, including Abdus Salam, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and others in attendance.
The ceremony was conducted by Rafiqul Islam Majnu, BNP's Feni-1 constituency organizational convener.
Later, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir joined a massive public rally at Chhagalnaiya court ground marking the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
BNP's Feni-1 constituency (Chhagalnaiya, Parshuram and Fulgazi) organizational unit organized the rally joined by a massive number of leaders and workers and cross section of people.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: "Our movement is not over yet. We have to stay on the streets until democracy is fully established".
He said, "We will have to continue our movement until recovery of our leader Begum Khaleda Zia's illness, returning of acting chairman Tarique Rahman to the country and establishing of people's government. We will have to build a discrimination-free and beautiful Bangladesh".
Noting that the fascists should be tried quickly, Fakhrul urged the interim government to hold the elections quickly after reforming electoral issues.
"The people have given you the responsibility to run the government after the ouster of fascist regime in massive mass uprising. Head of the government Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus is a respected person. He glorified the country by winning the Nobel Prize. We want to extend cooperation to him," the BNP secretary general said.
He said 60 lakh leaders and workers of BNP were made accused in 52,000 cases were lodged and 7000 leaders and activists were victims of enforced disappearance during the fallen regime.
"Many are still searching for their father. Even after suffering so much repression and torture, BNP leaders and workers were still in the field. They fought against fascism, did not accept authoritarianism. They will be in the struggle to establish democracy in the future too," Fakhrul said.
He said that preparations are underway to take BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for better treatment and sought doa from the people
of Feni for her recovery.
Rafiqul Alam Majnu, organizational coordinator of Feni-1 Constituency and convener of Dhaka City South unit of BNP, chaired the rally which was moderated by central leaders Belal Ahmed and Abu Taleb.
